I have been carving as an amateur since I got a BS in Sculpture in 1972. The first lesson out of school was: Art is a tough way to raise a family. I went to work as a welder. This keeps the art higher on the fun scale.
I have carved blocks, panels, glue-ups and found drift. Some ideas are independent concepts and some grow from the character of the wood. Some items are useful and some are decorative. I prefer to finish a surface with sharp tools rather than sandpaper. The process shows more than the finish.
I enjoy several different crafts and skills in producing art and this keeps my interest up.
After I retired, I started to gather blacksmithing tools with the intention of making carving tools. The steel is from a roller bearing, heated and forged to a 3/4 inch bar and then heated and forged to a tool shape before grinding.
