American style top that provides a larger work area compared to European-style tops with recessed

European benches. We have also just received a new
shipment of our traditional Hofmann benches, and all are on sale through the end of June.

Using SketchUp to Design Your Workshop
By Sean Headrick
San Jose, California
When I first started working with SketchUp, I wanted to create an inventory of shop tools that would
enable anyone to create the ideal work space. By drawing the shop and downloading the tools from
the 3D warehouse, you can customize the layout until you find the perfect solution for your space
and work flow. This article will show you how to build your shop environment,
download all the tools and accessories you will need and then organize them for maximum efficiency.

Q &

I am just starting to learn about woodworking, and am trying to decide which would be the more versatile
machine to buy first, a bandsaw or a tablesaw. Any suggestions?

Hiring Employees
By Douglas Bittinger
Smoky Mountain Woodworks
All right, you have your business up and running. You are making products and they are selling. You
have profits coming in and money in the bank. In fact orders are coming in faster than you can make
them. It's time to hire some help. You're about to place a classified ad in the newspaper, but
there are many important issues that you need to consider in advance.
What are they?

Touching Up Furniture
I often get calls from customers to come to their homes to touch up their
pieces in place if possible.
By far, the easiest and quickest way to accomplish a lot of everyday wear-and-tear
touch-ups is to use touch-up pens that are specially formulated for this task.
They are available in different colors that will match most of the common furniture
designs and colorations of the past and present.
Sometimes they can be a little tricky to use.

Sam Maloof 1916 - 2009
We were saddened to hear of the passing of one of the most
beloved elders of fine woodworking, Sam Maloof, on May 21, 2009 at age 93. Sam's unique designs,
particularly his signature walnut chairs, have inspired generations of woodworkers. We were
fortunate to host seminars with Sam at Highland dating back as far as 1983. His last visit to
Highland was in 2003.

Ben Arthur
Sales
Besides being an expert on our line of Festool power tools, Ben is a natural born carver that we imported straight from the Bayou.
He carves reproductions, replications, and
sometimes "half gone crazy" sculptures. Be it relief or 3-D, cut or grind, slice or gouge, power or
pressure, he knows how to accomplish it with a minimal loss of blood. Ben is also our customers' "go to guy" for the Carvewright CNC machine, and in fact owns
his own industrial-size CNC router which he operates as a sideline.
Ben likes to say "A challenge is a thrill that cannot be
put in a pill," so please give him one.
