My Visit to the Mountaintop

By George T. (Terry) Chapman
Fairburn, Georgia

Well, I've been to the mountaintop. I had a Master Class recently at Highland Woodworking in Atlanta with Mike Mahoney, world class bowl turner. It was a joy to watch him work and to realize that with proper instruction (and enough practice) we could all do this too. There were about ten of us in the class with a wide range of experience and ability and many hailing from far away. The result was some good bowls, some mediocre ones and some chunks of wood flying around the room.

Here's what I learned:

Q & A

I just read "Axes: Timber Framing Tools of the Trade" in the January issue of Wood News and it got me to wondering. I have very little call for an axe or hatchet, so what would be the best type to keep on hand in my shop for when a need arises?
Thanks, Kenn H

Creating Turned Models with SketchUp: Part 2

By Sean Headrick
San Jose, California

In last month's article you saw how to use SketchUp to model a turned bowl and then use that model to create a template to use when turning on the lathe. This month you will learn how to modify your design by adding feet and handles, and alter the proportions to find a design that is just what you imagined. We will also explore the technique known as "hidden geometry."

How to modify your design:

And They Call Me an Artist

By Wallace Macfarlane

TREEN: Made of "tree"; wooden. Of or belonging to a tree or trees; in quot. 1670, obtained or made from trees. -- Oxford English dictionary

When I began to make treen for fun and profit, I worried about the competition. How about all those woodturners who laminate exotic woods at an angle and turn bowls translucently thin? Precise craftsmen with micrometers in one pocket and scale drawings in another? How about those hand-rubbers who finish wood smoother than a baby's cheek?

So what is "treen" anyway?

By Douglas Bittinger

Smoky Mountain Woodworks

OK, so now you have your tools collected and arranged in a suitable workspace, you have your friends and family on board with the idea that you are a professional, you have created a legal business entity, set up the bookkeeping and found suppliers for the materials you will need to produce your product and have decided how much to charge. Now all you need are customers to buy that product and you are on your way!

Where do you find buyers?

Finishing Wood
with Alan Noel

Why Finishes Fail

wood finishing

Spring! We are finally getting into the best time of the year in terms of the weather. Now is the best time to clean up, clear out, throw away and rediscover treasures lost in the clutter of the winter months. This can also be the time when we unwittingly do the most damage to those treasured pieces in the home, especially to the older pieces that have been around for quite a while.

Here's how to avoid risking that damage:
