Q & A
Question:
I am a 54-year-old man and I am interested in woodworking and wood turning. Weekends are the only option for me. Where would you recommend  a novice like myself start? I have never done any carpentry/woodworking/wood turning, but would like to learn. Would a beginning turners class get me started, or should I take the beginner's router class or other tool classes?

E-mail us with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for publication, we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.

Taking the Plunge into Professional Woodworking

By Douglas Bittinger

I cannot say that I know anyone who was going through life with no woodworking experience and simply said to themselves "I think I'll become a professional woodworker," signed up for some courses to learn what they needed and then went looking for a job as a woodworker. Not to say it doesn't happen. I just don't know any.

Finishing Wood

SPRAY FINISHING

Applying finishing materials with a brush can be a very slow and arduous task. It is virtually impossible to get an even coat on large surfaces when using a brush. Here are 9 tips for spray finishing:

  Alexandra Lovinger
IT Customer Service
Alexandra was blown across the ocean by a cold winter storm in the month of February. After walking barefoot on Atlanta's fabled Stone Mountain a few days later, she decided to make Atlanta her new home, went back to Germany, packed a few pots & pans and has been with us ever since. She takes care of our Internet orders, and gives careful and loving attention to all customers with whom she comes in contact. In her spare time she runs a small picture framing business, plays racquetball, is working on a stone wall project in her backyard, and spends as much time as possible with her furry & feathery friends.
