Rounding the Rim on a Green Bowl
by Phil Colson
Woodturner
Roughing out green wood bowls is a great way to have dry bowls down the line to re-turn and
finish to sell or give as gifts.
Green wood (fresh cut wood) is easier to come by and turns beautifully. Turn your bowl with a
wall thickness approximately ten percent of the diameter of the bowl.
Now for the tip. To keep the rim from checking and cracking, round over the rim. Don't leave a
sharp edge. A ninety degree edge allows the smallest amount of fiber to be exposed to the air and
will dry out quickly, leading to more cracks. By rounding the rim, the exposed fiber is consistent
with all the adjacent fiber and a more even drying occurs.
Good luck and happy turning.
