Magnets, magnets, magnets
by Phil Colson

I use magnets for many jobs in my shop:
-
One inch rare earth magnets to hang the chuck key on the side of my lathe.
-
A magnetic tray to hold the screws when changing the jaw of my chuck.
-
On my hollowing tools, I use a magnet to keep up with the Allen wrenches for changing tips.
-
A magnet on my bandsaw for the Allen wrenches to make adjustments.
-
The chuck key for my Jacobs chuck.
-
The diamond hone for my gouges.
-
And one or two to keep my head on (just kidding).
How about emailing me and tell me how you use them:

In a
previous tip about my improvised sanding drum
, I was asked about the mini cell foam I used on the lathe
sanding drum. Well, I found mine in some shipping materials that came to the store. Now I have
a source:
www.oneoceankayaks.com
. I just ordered a piece 5/8" thick by 20x24" from them. I was in
Vermont last week and while visiting Al Stirt, he told me where to look for it. Very reasonably priced.
Al uses it to add a thickness to his sanding disc. I'll tell you about how he sands next tip. Very efficient.
