Down To Earth $avings — A Quick Tip
Frugality, pollution abatement, and fire prevention, all rolled into one little down to earth hint.
Rinse out used zipper-style plastic kitchen storage bags and reuse them in the shop to enclose rags,
disposable brushes, and other finish- and thinner-laden materials. The airtight bag will lessen the
smells and VOCs emitted by some finishing materials and the airtight bag will potentially help
eliminate the air necessary to promote spontaneous combustion. As an extra precaution, place the
sealed plastic bag in a metal coffee can and at the end of the day dispose of the whole thing in an
outside garbage can. If you are really cautious (as we all should be), you can even "top off" the
can with water. Call me paranoid, but rather safe than sorry.
