Here's My Woodcarving!

I've been a woodworking hobbyist for nearly 19 years, mainly building furniture and hand tools. I
started letter carving and chip carving a few years ago, but am relatively new to relief carving. This
carved sharpening stone holder is my third relief carving project.
The design is based on an antique I saw at a dealers' show—an oilstone holder with hand tools
carved into the lid. The tools I carved are a little different than the original, as is the stone.
Mine is ceramic.
The lid is Swiss Pear and the box is Cocobolo. The fine grain and dense properties of Swiss Pear
result in crisp details and many trips to the leather strop. Despite the hardness, I would still
call it an excellent wood to carve.

The letter carved symbol is from a meditation bench made of cherry.
The chip carved plane is a mini coffin smoother made of Swiss Pear. I also made the blade.
The chip carved box is made of pine.
The Celtic cross is made of sugar pine with cherry and purpleheart inlay.
