Since the original publication of her 'Show Us Your Woodcarving' column in January 2012, Mary May has released a book with Lost Art Press, Carving the Acanthus Leaf, which is available for purchase from Highland Woodworking.
You can also read an interview we did with Mary May back in 2017 when she was teaching one of her carving classes at Highland.
Mary will be guiding a Woodcarvers Tour of London/UK from May 4 - 14, 2020. The tour will feature the work of the fabulous 17th century English woodcarver, Grinling Gibbons. His deeply ornate carvings often appear to defy gravity. This small group tour will focus on visiting churches, grand homes, palaces, and museums where his magnificent carvings are displayed. Enjoy the combination of free time to explore and guided tours focusing on learning, discovering and admiring Gibbons' historic carvings. You can find more information by clicking here.
If you can't make it on her London/UK tour, we are excited to announce that she will again be teaching her Fundamentals of Woodcarving class here at Highland Woodworking from November 14-15, 2020. You can sign-up on our website by clicking here, but hurry, this class sells out!
I have been a professional woodcarver for over 20 years.
I work with a variety of furniture makers and builders to create period furniture reproductions, architectural details, and sculptural work.
I have had opportunities to study with a variety of master carvers around the world to learn the traditional European techniques of this ancient art. I endeavor to keep this art alive through teaching at various locations throughout the US, as well as in my workshop in Charleston, SC.
You can visit Mary May's website and online school at Mary May's School of Traditional Woodworking.
