Here's My Stuff!
by John Eugster

I've been working wood in one way or another
for most of my life. I retired in 2008 after teaching shop classes for 31 years mostly at the
junior high school level and also construction-related classes at a prison for boys. I took on side
jobs and created custom one-of-a-kind furniture pieces part time until I retired. The plan was to
pursue this full time, but as you know the economy retired just about the same time I did! I have a
portfolio of my work at
www.woodworksbyjohn.com
and maintain a blog to share my projects and keep
clients informed about the progress of their work.
As I was looking through your latest newsletter I saw the "Show us your
Photos" link so thought that I'd share my Christmas project. I know you sell the
Hock plane kits
and this scrub plane I made uses the
Hock 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" radiused blade
. I received the blade as a
Christmas present from my wife. I decided to modify the classic Krenov-style plane with the knob
(in-fill plane inspired) and a saw-type handle on the back so I could really get some power and grip
on the plane. As you can see by the bottom picture, it works wonderfully! Over-all length is just
under 11", and like the Krenov style, it uses dowels (Ebony in this case) to pin it all together.
The main part of this tool is Walnut while the sides are Canarywood and the wedge is Zebrawood. The
design is my own and the shape of the knob was made to conform to the way my hand wraps around it.
The sole is Purple Heart, and the mouth is fairly large so it can spit out a good sized shaving when
scrubbing.
