Here's My Workshop!

I built my new shop starting in 2008. My old smaller shop was completely destroyed during the
Hurricane Katrina flood in 2005. Moving out of New Orleans gave us the ability to find a larger piece of property where I could have a much larger workshop in my back yard. My shop is 24x40 and is 2 stories tall with 10 foot ceilings.
I have been accumulating my
dream tools one by one and constantly reorganizing my shop layout. I have to say that I feel like a
kid in a toy store every time I go into my shop. For me it has been as much fun building the shop as it is to work in it. I have done woodworking since a very young age and have always had to work in overcrowded garages and carports.
As you can see in the photos, my shop is a bit of a mess right now. That's because I am in the middle of building a group of wood boxes.
I find it very nice to be able to just go to each tool as needed and not have to constantly shuffle the larger tools around and manipulate for space. Now I can just work in comfort and not worry about disturbing neighbors when I work late at night. My wife is very supportive of my workshop and my woodworking because she knows how much it has always meant to me. When I stop for the night I just turn out the lights and lock the doors.
I enjoy what I do and especially appreciate the fantastic and unique beauty that I see in wood with its grain, texture, natural colors, and unique working properties. The oak that I use has been recycled from trees knocked over during Hurricane Katrina. For me this is a very special wood.
When I create, I just go with the flow and mostly visualize what I want it to look like. All of my work is unique and individual - no mass production or assembly lines.
