Here's My Woodworking!

by Christopher Perryman
Asheville, North Carolina

I'm a pro woodworker in Asheville, NC and I've been meaning to send you some images of my work for months. Here is a piece called the Chest de los Muertos. It's made from recycled mahogany that belonged to the client's late grandfather. He worked for the U.S. State Department in the 1940s and lived in Peru. He commissioned a coffee table from a local woodworker there out of the local material. Eventually he came back to the U.S. with the table where it survived for decades and was passed down through the family. Eventually however, it came apart and instead of tossing out three huge slabs of mahogany with sentimental value, the client wanted to rework the wood into a new piece.

We decided on this design which was sized to also hold on top an old steamer chest that had belonged to the client's great grandmother, who traveled the world with it in the 1920s. We decided to pay homage to the late ancestors with the latin catholic "day of the dead" theme carved into the drawer boxes veiled by the curtain-esque case on the outside. This piece was accepted into the 16th Annual Master Woodworker's Show in Knoxville this year and won a "People's Choice Award". All in all, this project was tons of fun.
