Here's My Workshop!

by Greg Matthews
Waynesville, North Carolina

I got into woodworking at age 45 as a second career when we moved to Waynesville, NC. I sold my corrugated box business before moving up here from Charlotte, NC and opened Balsam Mountain Woodworks. I have done mostly table commissions and "furnishings" for people, publicizing my work mainly through word of mouth. I do a lot of landscape gardening in the warmer months and do my woodworking mostly October through April. We bought some land behind our property in 2005 and I was able to saw about 1400 board feet from the area we developed, so presently I don't have to buy my lumber. I have worked solo so far but as I get closer to 60 I'm thinking of hiring some part-time help for the heavy work!

I designed and built this hand tool cabinet as a student project when I attended Haywood Community College in Western North Carolina. We live next to the Blue Ridge Parkway and overlook the Smoky Mountains. The Waynesville community area is quite oriented to crafts.
