Prepping for The Top Coat

wood finishing

by Alan Noel

All of the sanding has been done. Two or more coats of finish have been applied and you are now ready for the final coat or "top coat". Here are seven tips to help smooth the way.

  1. When prep sanding for the top coat, always use fine sand paper with grit of 600 or more.

  2. Be very careful when sanding close to the edges of flat surfaces. This is where it's easiest to sand through the previous coats of finish.

  3. Always use fine steel wool (0000) or synthetic steel wool (Scotch Brite) to rub rounded or irregular surfaces like carvings and spindles.

  4. Be sure to use a tack cloth to remove all of the sanding dust.

  5. Now is the time to do minor touch ups.

  6. Proper lighting is a must during any finishing procedure.

  7. Use adequate ventilation. Air movement is the key in order for the finish to cure properly.
