Terrapin Studio came to be after earning a degree in professional crafts-wood at Haywood Community College, Clyde NC in 1995. Previously, I completed the cabinetmaking program at Atlanta Area Technical School in 1973. I built the shop myself with help from my wife and friends. It is a well equipped studio with traditional and modern machinery. The building is next to my house in the Smoky Mountains of NC in Whittier.
I am currently making a couple of walnut end tables, and just recently made a banjo pot for a friend using a stack lamination turning process. My next projects include a walnut bed and a maple table using native air dried wood. I am presently a member of the Smoky Mountain Woodturners in Sylva NC.
I use my Unisaw mostly and my Robland K26 combination machine fills in the blanks. The Laguna HD16 bandsaw is great for resawing. The 13" Steel City planer that I purchased from Highland Woodworking does great on figured wood and I turn wood on a Grizzly lathe. My work bench was bought at auction, made by Goingback Chiltoskie, one of the original artists in the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild.
I can turn a 16' long board at my chop saw without hitting the ceiling as I used 42' scissor trusses to create a cathedral ceiling.
I am inspired by the creative design process, and the freedom of having a wonderful space for making beautiful and useful handcrafted objects.
I graduated from Northside High School in 1970 and we lived on West Paces Ferry in Atlanta. My father, John McMillan was on TV for Central Chevrolet in Buckhead when commercials were live.
