Using Milk Paint

wood finishing

by Alan Noel
Professional Wood Finisher

Milk paint has been around for many, many years and is a good choice of finish when reproducing windsor style chairs, shaker style furniture and the list goes on. Milk paint is very easy to use and the colors can be mixed together for even more color variety. Here are eight tips to help you along the way.

  1. Milk paint is an organic product. Use it anywhere.
  2. When mixing the powder and water, add water to get the desired consistency.
  3. The paint will thicken while setting, so a little water can be added to thin as necessary.
  4. If painting over an existing finish, Extra-Bond should be added to the first coat.
  5. All of the colors can be intermixed, but be sure to measure correctly for consistency.
  6. Try to mix only what you need. Leftover paint can be refrigerated for a couple of days by adding a little water to the top of the paint in an airtight container .
  7. Milk paint can be sprayed, brushed, rolled or ragged on.
  8. Milk paint cleans up with soap and water.
