Mirka CEROS Sanders and Abranet Mesh Abrasives
The Mirka CEROS sander is a revolutionary development in random orbit sanders. It combines the best features of electric and pneumatic sanders in one electric sander. Half the size and weight of traditional electric sanders, its low profile and palm lever switch make it very easy to handle with one hand. Used with Mirka's unique Abranet mesh abrasives and a good dust extractor, the improved dust collection efficiency results in a better quality finish, a cleaner workspace and longer abrasive life. Check out this awesome Mirka combination:

Bits & Pieces & Reverse Designing
More Bits & Pieces – Charging Off Even More Bits & Pieces – On The Block Still More Bits & Pieces – Prototyping a New Year’s Promise Mobile Sanding Center – Drawer Fronts & Trim
This month, Steve completes the drawer fronts and trim on his mobile sanding center. But first, he describes several 'bits and pieces' projects he is doing in between his time spent outside in the summer sun.
CLICK HERE to take a look at some of the summer projects Steve has got going on: Chip Carving Workshop Chip carving, also known as spoon carving or "Kerbschnitt," is the ideal introduction to woodcarving for beginners. This simple traditional carving method uses just a few basic knives to remove selected chips of wood in small triangles, squares, and free-form curves, producing amazingly intricate and delicate results. Nationally known woodcarving artist and author Lora S. Irish shows you how to get started in this venerable craft. Pyrography Workbook Sue Walters, internationally renowned Australian pyrographer, teaches you everything you need to know to create stunning pyrography artwork through three step by step projects. Order these books from us during August 2013 for 33% off list price. Click here for more details and to LOOK INSIDE each of the books:

The Auriou Rasps:
Tool Review By Jeffrey Fleisher New market, VA I always shied away from using rasps in my woodworking because they always seemed to gouge the surface or leave it rough with long linear scrapes. That was until I took a class on building a Sam Maloof-style rocking chair and was introduced to Auriou rasps. CLICK HERE to read the rest of the review:

Finishing Wood
with Alan Noel How Many Coats is Enough? Over the years I have been asked many times, "How many coats of finish is enough"? Well, that is a good question, to which there is no definitive answer. It all depends... and I say that a lot. This month we'll narrow the question a bit to just oil-based finishes. Here are SIX tips for knowing when you might be done using an oil-based finish:

A Craftsman’s Guide to Understanding Wood by Christian Becksvoort Recently at a Lie-Nielsen hand tool event, we asked Chris Becksvoort what distinguished his new Lost Art Press book from Bruce Hoadley's best-selling "Understanding Wood" (first published by Taunton back in 1980). His answer: "That is a great book. He knows a lot about wood. However he's not a woodworker." Well that pretty much answered the question. A student of the subject all his life, Becksvoort for sure knows a lot about trees and wood, and as one of the most accomplished craftsmen of our time, he is especially knowledgeable about the science of wood as it applies to building furniture. See why every woodworker should own this book:

Elkhead Handles for Knew Concepts Saws
When we first saw a Knew Concepts fretsaw in action, we knew it was a very fine tool, but wondered how many woodworkers would be willing to shell out $100 for a tool they've been used to buying for $15. Now after selling over 500 of the saws, that doubt has been erased. The only complaint we ever recall was that the appearance of the handle did not live up to the beauty of the saw. Elkhead Tools has created a remedy for that in the form of these beautiful well-made cocobolo handles. Just like the saws, they are not cheap but some who own the saw will want to retrofit one of these handles. Click here for more info:

WOOD SLICER
Testimonial
A few days ago I received my wood slicer blade and talk about a happy man, I am one. I have a 14 inch rigid band saw and have had it for several years with little of no use. I was never happy with the way it cut or for that matter there wasn't a lot I liked about it. I just keep it around to do those things I couldn't do with a table saw. I have used it more these past few days than I did in the past several months. Its almost like I have a new band saw. The ease of cutting wood is now a pleasure where is use to be a pain in the butt. You have a winner with the wood slicer. I have never done any wood slicing, since I knew the band saw couldn't handle it with the blades I have been using. I plan on using the wood slicer for all my band saw needs in the future. — Tom G. Get Yourself a Wood Slicer: |
