Ask the Staff

Question:

I have purchased several tools that require carbide tips for turning. They continue to escalate in price.

I was wondering if there is any way of sharpening these carbide tips when they get dull?

Thanks,
Greg

Answer:

Greg

You can use a diamond stone (or a set of EZE-LAP Diamond paddles ) to hone carbide edges. Diamond is hard enough to work on carbide and many turners will use a diamond stone to keep edges honed.

You can also try silicon carbide sandpaper for a low tech way to touch up an edge in good shape.

If you need to grind lots of carbide for an edge in bad condition, a silicon carbide grinding wheel would speed things along.
