Wipe-On Varnish

Wipe-on varnishes are easy to use and produce a very nice finish. Although they do have their drawbacks, with a little practice and patience a very nice finish that is easy to maintain can be achieved with little effort. Here are some tips:

Prep your project as you would for any finsining material.

If you plan on using a stain, be sure to allow ample drying time before proceeding. I usually allow at least 48 hours for the stain to dry.

Lightly rub the surface with a scotchbrite pad and remove any dust with a tack cloth.

If all is good, simply wipe on the first coat evenly.

With good air movement, let dry for 24 hours.

Repeat Step 3 removing any trash that has settled in the finish.

Repeat Step 4.

Three coats are usually enough so for the last coat, sand the finish lightly with 400 paper, remove dust and apply the last coat or as many more as you like using the same steps as before.

To maintain or to "freshen up" this finish sand with 400 paper, remove dust and reapply.
