Ask the Staff
Question:
Dear Highland Woodworking,
My name is Bob Delph and I am a customer. I have a question about wooden bodied planes.
When they are not in use do you remove the iron?
Thank you,
Bob
Answer:
Bob,
You do not need to remove the iron when not in use. If you do happen to want to flatten the bottom of a wooden plane, you would want to have the iron wedged in (but with the cutting edge up into the plane body and not protruding out from the bottom). This lets you flatten the bottom with the forces of the iron wedged into place to simulate actual use so the flatten process is more accurate.
