Here's My Woodworking!

I started woodworking in high school. I needed to select another class or my
parents were going to make me take band for another year. All I
remember about my first woodworking class was the teacher making us
spend an entire week using hand planes to flatten and square one piece
of wood. By the time I reached my senior year I was taking 3 hours
of wood shop every day. My second year I convinced my instructor to
let me build a roll top desk. My mom had always wanted one and they
didn't have the financial wherewithal to buy one. We weren't
supposed to be tackling such advanced projects and they did their best
to discourage me but perseverance won out. It took me the entire
school year to complete but it finally made its way to Mom's dining
room and is still there today, 30 years later.
Today, for inspiration I mostly like to pay attention to what people
around me say they are missing or would like to have, and then surprise
them with the item later. Most of the ideas come from woodworking
magazines or my local woodworking club members. Some of the projects
are the direct result of an idea my wife has had and turned over to me
to make happen. Recently, along with the dining table below, I built her a china
hutch and redesigned the pantry in the kitchen for more storage space.
I especially like that last one because I had to build a butcher block
counter top out of plain 2x4s.

Dining Table - Base is laminated barn wood (pine) with a
mahogany cross brace and the top is 8/4 hickory
finished with oil based poly.
