Safety Tip: Holding Your Turning Tools
Having watched and looked at years of woodturning videos and pictures on the use of calipers and a parting tool, I am amazed at the unsafe practice of holding the calipers in the left hand and the parting tool in the right hand, thereby causing the left underarm to rest or get too close to the spinning head stock, whether or not it has a chuck attached.
I may have put the 'teur' and the 'am' in 'amateur, but I have always held the calipers/open ended wrenches in the right hand and the parting tool or other tool in the left hand. I even use left hand turning when turning close to the head stock or turning thin spindles when one has to use a hand on the backside for support.
