Curlin' Burls and Swinging Flames
by Alan Noel
Professional Wood Finisher
If you've ever had the pleasure of dealing with flame cuts or burls
on antique furniture, I'm sure you are well aware of the challenges
these beautiful cuts have to offer. Although they can be a challenge to
glue back down, there are a couple of tricks to keep these veneers
in place.
Here are 11 tips:
-
Gather all of the materials you will need before starting the project.
-
Remove the finish.
-
Make sure the surface is clean and free of debris.
-
Check for any small loose pieces and glue these back into place using
Hide Glue
and let dry.
-
Again, using hide glue, spread the glue liberally on the surface and "scrub" the glue into all of the nooks and crannies.
-
Wipe off the excess glue with a warm, wet rag.
-
Place wax paper over the entire surface and place whatever heavy weights you have to apply pressure. We use scrap pieces of granite.
-
Once all is dry, remove paper and let set for a couple of days.
-
Fill any voids with your choice of
wood putty
then sand smooth.
-
Older cuts of veneer are usually much thicker than modern materials, so there is more room for sanding.
-
On large surfaces we do these in sections.
