My shop is a 900 Sq ft, in a seperate building located adjacent to my house.
I began my woodworking career at the age of 6, in a small Victorian upstate NY town called Saratoga Springs. My grandfather used to let me play on his scroll saw. He either saw great competence in a 6 year old, or he was incompetent himself, for letting a 6 year old play with a motorized scroll saw; I imagine it was a bit of both. I even tried to make a house with it once. What a smile I have on my face remembering the futility. Through my teens I made a few things in shop class but nothing of note. Although when I look back, they did come out better than most of my classmates. At the age of 19 I moved to Southern California, where I met a man making a record cabinet out of Paducah. My way of life changed that day.
I am 59 years old now, and I will honestly say, I spend about 300 days a year in the shop you see here. I am part wood now. It is my life and, kids and family/friends aside, how I view my worth as person, an artist, engineer and craftsman. I truly enjoy practicing techniques, relish sanding and figuring out how rounds mold into flats. Much of my work over the last 20 years has been architectural elements on my own homes. The newest one, now 15 years.
I have recently been attending woodworking classes at Cerritos College in Southern California. I hope to teach there one day. It has afforded me the opportunity and vehicle, to make actual furniture and upgrades to the house.
Below are several projects that I have recently made (Photos by Andrew Lee):
