Here's My Woodworking!

by Leo Camp
Owego, NY

The first project I ever made was the oak jewelry box above, which I gave to my wife.

I grew up in sawdust and wood chips, as my Dad was a cabinet maker. I helped out in the shop growing up, but never really took an interest then, as I had bigger plans in life. When I was forced into retirement eleven years ago, I figured I would get some equipment and try my hand at some woodworking again. I started out making jewelry boxes for the granddaughters (5 of them), then different styles of clocks, and finally I got into home furnishings.

All of the lumber for my projects is milled right at my shop. I keep a running supply of local hardwoods including maple, birch, walnut, cherry and oak. This keeps my cost down on materials. As for labor, my time spent on a project isn't as important to me as enjoying the final results for my time.

Chess set made for my Son as a birthday
present. Made from mahogany and maple.
Chess pieces are turned from ash.
Yet another chess set from mahogany and ash.
Pieces again made from ash. Hidden storage
drawer for pieces in the bottom of the
game board.
Six slot long gun cabinet, made from local
white pine… This I made as a donation for a
benefit auction for a seriously ill person…
it brought 550 dollars at auction.
I felt really good about my contribution!
This is an auctioneer’s gavel and storage box
made from hard maple as a gift for my nephew
when he returned from auctioneer school
someplace in Missouri.
A reptile cage using red oak and scrub bark
hickory (it was like cutting concrete). Made this
for my Grandson for his newly acquired
bearded dragon named Stanley.
Here's a toy box with raised panel front and sides
with cushion top for sitting. Probably a little
fancy for a toy box, but when the kids are older
it can be used as a blanket chest.
