I have always been interested in woodworking. Growing up, my father was
constantly building something, and I was his Number 1 guy. So, when I saw that
they offered woodworking shop classes in junior high, I immediately signed up. I
continued with courses in senior high school and in college I progressed to more
advanced courses, such as furniture design.
Fast forward 30 years, I am now a computer scientist and I have a number of hobbies
but woodworking and fine furniture building continue to be my passion. I mainly
work with exotic and highly figured domestic woods. I have built everything from
beds, to live edge dining tables, console tables, mirrors, and cabinets. My latest
project was a birthday present for my wife. I made her a cherry blanket chest lined
with aromatic red cedar. There is inlaid black walnut and varied spaced dovetails. I
added butterfly key joints and hand carved detail around the top of the chest to
match the detail in the "paw feet." Yes, I said "paw feet"...inspired by our 130
pound black Labrador retriever, Cooper.

The joinery for this chest was created with the
Leigh D4R Pro 24" Dovetail Jig
and
the
Foredom 2252 Chisel Carving Kit
, both purchased from Highland Woodworking. The piece was
finished with tung and linseed oils and
Waterlox Original Satin Topcoat
. The Leigh
Dovetail Jig was especially useful due to the flexibility and infinite setting of the
dovetail framework. Thanks Highland for the exceptional service!
