I designed and had my shop built 5 years ago as I prepared to retire. The building includes a working cupola with an integrated attic fan. It clears the air of dust in seconds.

The cupola if functional - it houses a ceiling fan for rapid
dust extraction. It takes about 1 minute to clear the dust
out of the shop.
|
The shop, not including the porch and shed is 25' x 27'. The porch is wired so I often use it during mild weather. The shed is for outdoor tools but also includes a vacuum closet that ports into the shop.
|
Working porch has power outlets to allow working outside
in nice weather.

Although I took a couple of shop classes in high school - and made the requisite hanging key ring holder - it didn't really take. However, after college I married and then joined the Navy. With no money and an emerging young family, we soon needed furniture that I couldn't afford. Luckily, in those days most Navy bases had a wood shop manned by a couple of senior chief petty officers. With their guidance, I built a couple of dressers, a table or two and was hooked. After the Navy, my business career included multiple moves and travel so it has not been a straight line. But as retirement came into view, I prepared by designing my "dream" shop. I was lucky to have a couple of "old guys" (the Navy Chiefs) to help me get started but, now that I'm the "old guy", I'm not sure how young people get started without an apprentice system.
