Maloof-Inspired Rocking Chair Seminar Was a Huge Success
Rocking chair dreams were in abundance during Charles Brock's recent "Build A Maloof Inspired
Rocker" seminar in Highland Woodworking's Tage Frid Classroom. A sell-out crowd from all-over the United States
braved a winter snowstorm to attend a weekend dedicated to learning the skills necessary to
construct a sculptured rocking chair.
This project is thought of as a "Bucket List" project for every fine woodworker who has been
fortunate enough to see Sam Maloof's rocking chair artistry. As an introduction on Friday night, students
were treated to a lecture entitled "Form Follows Function, Exploring the Maloof Rocker." Using two
of Chuck's Maloof-inspired rockers, he explained the attributes of this chair and how the chair's
geometry and lines work together to make the chair not only extremely comfortable, but always seemingly
always in motion.
Saturday and Sunday were two full days of watching seat coopering and sculpting; seat-to-leg joinery; arm,
spindle and crest rail carving; rocker laminating; with continuous entertainment from Charles' humorous yet
informative style.
Students left with the resources (patterns, instructions, notes plus many new tools purchased in the store) as well as the enthusiasm to
build their own rockers. We can't wait to see those dreams come true!
We are planning a Seven-Day Build Your Own Maloof-Inspired Rocker hands-on seminar right now. We will only have room for ten students. Check the Highland website for more details that will be posted soon
and sign up if you'd like to check this item off your Bucket List.
