Wooden Globe
Project
By Marco Aurelio R. Guimarães
Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil
Dear
Wood News
,
I'm a friend of Dilo Marcio Fernandino, whose article was just published in your online magazine. We
both live in the same Brazilian city and we frequently talk to each other on the subject of
woodworking — our common passion. After reading Dilo's article in
Wood News
and talking to
him, I felt myself encouraged enough to submit for your consideration some photos showing how I
built one of my recent works.
Q &
A
I am wanting to make raised panel doors on my router table.
A friend told me that I needed a speed controlled router. Would you give
me some information on this? Also, what type of router do you recommend?
E-mail

with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for
publication,
we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.
SketchUp:
3D Modeling for Woodworkers
By Sean Headrick
San Jose, California
Welcome to my new monthly column featuring the benefits and uses of Google SketchUp. In this first
article, I want to share a little bit about how I came to be a SketchUp fan and how this tool has
benefited my work.
Since I began woodworking about twelve years ago, I have had an eye out for a 3D modeling
software that would bring my ideas to life on the computer screen.
What I discovered was:

Financial Tools
By Douglas Bittinger
Smoky Mountain Woodworks
I do not consider myself qualified to advise
anyone on the management of their finances, where and how to invest your money, so I will leave that
to someone who is. For my part I will share with you here what I have learned about the tools used
to handle the financial side of a small woodworking business.
Secrets to Managing Shop Finances:
Letter from a Reader
I am a 73-year-old retired businessman who has worked with wood off and on since high school shop.
These days I'm in a newly-purchased 2-bedroom condo in NJ. My shop is in my bedroom. Unfortunately two days after we moved in,
I found myself in the hospital, and a week later went home with one
less leg than when I'd entered. Over the last 6 months I've set up my "bedroom shop" in an efficient way, despite doing it on one leg.

New Parallel Guides Take Guided
Rail Cutting to a Whole New Level
Text & photos by Jerry Work
©2009 The Dovetail Joint
Those familiar with the Festool guided rail cutting and routing system know just how
useful it is to be able to move a circular saw, jig saw or router across a stationary work
piece in a perfectly straight line. In my studio I use guide rails daily to make all kinds of
cuts. Festool's new Parallel Guide system also makes an
excellent squaring cut guide as well, turning the guide rail and plunge saw into a fast and
efficient substitute for a table saw for most cutting operations.
Yup, you can virtually eliminate the need for a bulky and dangerous table saw with this
clever new accessory.

SPRING CLEANING
About this time every year it seems we all get a hankering to clean something, or maybe get started
again on a project we put away last fall. Or perhaps you're moving into a new house. Often when
furniture has been stored in the garage, an outbuilding or storage unit, it may be covered in mold
and mildew, or it simply appears as though it could use a good cleaning.
Here are a few tips to help you:
