Here's My Workshop!

by George Yohanek
Cordova, TN

My wife is generous enough to let me have about half the garage for my heavy tools, table saw, miter saw, work bench and DeWalt planer. But most of my work is accomplished in the work shop in the back yard which my wife also was nice enough to have built for me. It could have been bigger but there are provisions to build out the back of the shop. Currently the shop is 16 ft by 12 ft. It is wired for 220 lights and air conditioning or heat.

I have a One Way Lathe and a Steel City 14" Band saw. I have a small drill press, a dual grinder to sharpen my tools in addition to a well stocked hand tool assortment. I also have a Craftsman Router table but need to upgrade that. Most of my work is done on my One Way Lathe. I do repair work for friends and for my church and once in a while will build an item (display case, kneeling stand, wall cabinet and closet unit) for a small service fee. Most of the items I make on the lathe, pens, tops, boxes, bowls and planter stands, I give away for gifts.

I entered a Craft Show one time and everyone in my family made and sold something. My daughter made lamps from liquor bottles, my son’s wife made decorated wine glasses and my other son made purses from cigar boxes. We all agreed we would not try that again. It was a whole lot of work for only a few hundred dollars.

I love woodworking and feel it allows me to express myself in the projects I make and build.

My youngest son (54 years old) has joined me in my turning shop every Tuesday evening and is learning to turn. We both belong to the Memphis Woodturners and the AAW, which gives us untold learning experiences we could not find anywhere else.
